Arts United Community Partnership Grant Awards 2006-2007

Arts United of Greater Fort Wayne, the umbrella organization for arts and cultural organizations in northeast Indiana, has awarded a total of nearly $40,000 in project grants through the Community Partnership Grants (CPG) program. The 18 organizations that received funding met one or more of the following program goals:

1) To further the understanding and appreciation of the vital role that the arts can play in the educational process;
2) To further the understanding and appreciation of this country's rich cultural heritage; and/or
3) To help to ensure access, for all sectors of our citizenry, to the wider variety of arts activities that take place in our community.

Grant applications were reviewed by a panel representative of a broad spectrum of the community; including art specialists, educators, business professionals and arts patrons. The organizations received CPG funds for the 2006-2007 fiscal year:

Miami County Historical Society
The Miami County Historical Society is hosting its 31st annual Heritage Days Festival at the Miami County 4-H Fairgrounds on August 25-27, 2006. The festival embraces the artistic and cultural heritage of Miami County from pre-history to the present and directly meets CPG goals.

Plymouth Congregational Church
Fort Wayne is honored to host the Bangor Choir, and famed mezzo soprano, Eleri Owen, from Wales, where they will perform for our community as part of the Plymouth Congregational Church Music Series, for Heritage Junior and Senior High School students, and participate in a cross cultural exchange with the Jazz Group, Lynn Lawson and Friends at the American Legion Post 47. The Fort Wayne events are part of a Midwest Tour that begins with an invitational performance at the Chicago Celtic Festival.

Embassy Theatre Foundation, Inc.
Funding would be used to support a portion of the expenses to present a collaborative arts presentation for the communities in and around Fort Wayne. The Embassy Theatre will collaborate with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic in presenting a collaborative event - a classic silent film accompanied by Dennis James on the organ.

University of St. Francis/School of Creative Arts
The Closer Look Series brings a diverse group of artists and scholars to Fort Wayne for a series of six free public lectures, providing quality, multicultural arts programs to the community. The series leads to increased recognition of the ability of artists to contribute in a significant way toward the acceptance and understanding of diversity in the community.

St. John Baptist School/ Arts & Enrichment
These projects, sponsored by the Arts & Enrichment Committee, will provide on-site and in the classrooms, guest artists presenting a variety of arts experiences- which are integrated into the general curriculum and will transport them to other art performances, exposing them to the wide variety of arts activities in our community. Further exposure to the arts is provided through the APE (additional programs of enrichment) Program which is presented twice during the school year.

Ft Wayne Parks Foundation Parks & Recreation
Affordable family programming at the Foellinger Outdoor Theatre advances the Fort Wayne Parks & Recreation's mission to enhance area residents' quality of life by providing positive opportunities for leisure time. The Parks & Recreation Department endeavors to encourage an appreciation of cultural diversity and helps ensure access to families with quality performances in a unique outdoor amphitheatre.

Audiences Unlimited, Inc.
Program provides access to cultural events for individuals residing in long-term care institutions and subsidized independent living facilities. Through its In-Community program the organization obtains free admissions to the cultural activities offered across the community.

FAME
The annual two-day weekend FAME Festival at the Grand Wayne Center, FAME'S hallmark event, celebrates multiculturalism in the arts centering on FAME's 2007 Cultural Focus, the African-American arts. The festival exposes more than 20,000 people, including underserved populations, to the multicultural arts in an educational environment, bringing the Grand Wayne Center's largest audience to downtown Fort Wayne.

Wabash Marketplace, Inc.
Funds would support the Paradise Arts Festival - created to promote and increase the accessibility of fine and performing arts to the Wabash community and region for all ages at no charge. The festival also promotes various art forms by artists and artisans from across Indiana.

IPFW Chamber Singers
This project involves two collaborative performances of Haydn's grand oratorio, The Creation, by the IPFW Chamber Singers, South Bend Vesper Chorale, and a professional orchestra. Grant funds would support the Fort Wayne performance at Trinity English Lutheran Church on Saturday, March 24, 2007, by helping to sustain the cost of the professional orchestra.

Science Central, Inc.
SciTech Studios, a program of Science Central for the past 9 years, introduces teens to the science and art of media production. SciTech Studios, with the support of Arts United, will expand the program, making offsite programs available to an increased number of youth-serving organizations during 2006-2007.

Johnny Appleseed Festival, Inc.
The festival seeks funding for the historically accurate entertainment component so enjoyed by visitors. Festival entertainment includes two open-air stages, fife and drums and pipe bands, and historical characters including Civil War era re-enactors.

Heartland Chamber Chorale, Inc.
During the 10th Anniversary, the HCC will expand its Side by Side mentoring program in celebration of its faithful commitment to community and education. The HCC will adopt and perform special programs with two high school choirs this season, and offer unique individual opportunities for exceptionally talented choristers to share the stage with the Chorale on each of its subscription concerts.

Fort Wayne Summer Symphony Association
The Fort Wayne Summer Symphony Association requests fund for its 50th anniversary Concert Series; the series includes 4 Mostly Mozart Concerts at the Foellinger Theatre and 24 on site performances at area parks and assisted living centers.

Auburn Arts Commission
The AAC is organizing an extensive arts education and appreciation project around the works of the world-renowned sculptor J. Seward Johnson. Sculpture on the Square will begin with education components for school children and adults in the spring 2007 and will culminate with the exhibit of life size bronze sculpture in and around downtown Auburn.

Fort Wayne Children's Choir
Using a multidisciplinary approach, the Choralfest 2006 will make use of local guest artists and Fort Wayne Children's Choir alumni for the training and presentation of the genres of music utilized by the Fort Wayne Children's Choir.

Old Fort YMCA
Arts at the Y is an Old Fort YMCA program introducing children to the wonderful world of culture and art, enhancing discipline, developing skills, educating and building appreciation of the arts. Art programs are inaccessible to some children in our service area and the Old Fort Y is able to fill this void.
